Merlin
Hahnemühle Fine-Art Print
9” x 9” on 308gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag, edition of 5, signed and numbered by the artist.
Printed in Ireland.
About the Piece
“The piece ‘Merlin’ is of a merlin hawk flying over the Sheeffry Mountains in Co Mayo. It is inspired by the poem A Merlin in the Sheffrys by Irish poet Martin Dyar. The colour palette is limited to earthy shades of green and grey, and the bird is a focal point in the image against an aerial view of the Sherries as a backdrop. The textures are rugged like the terrain. I created a variety of textures and combined them digitally to create this illustration.
I drew on influences from some of my favourite 20th-century English artists Eric Ravilious and Bernard Cheese who often depicted rural-themed scenes.”
About the Artist
Alan is an Irish visual artist and author who works mostly in illustration, comics, graphic printmaking, papercraft, and motion graphics. He is passionate about all aspects of the graphic arts and is hugely interested in vernacular design and uncovering stories through cultural-historical archives. This is reflected in his heavily researched and considered comics, heritage-based commissions and re-appropriation of vernacular typography and graphic aesthetics in his work.
